Charity to me is when a person out of total kindness of their hearts, decides to do any act of kindness, not neccesesarily in material ways ( such as money) but also in their actions and behaviors.
I recieved an email today from a friend, he will be participating in a run in London for blind children. He will give up much of his time in training, fundraising, etc. not for what he will receive out of the deal but to make a difference in the world, in his own small, but signifigant ways.
What does the word "charity" mean to you? Can you recall a moment in your own life when someone was charitable towards you, or you were involved in a charity event?

Hey Megs! Charity. Honestly I think the word has been somewhat misused.. we usually relate it to images of balls and fancy events with the rich and famous and push the word far out of our reach. I disagree, though.. charity is an everyday practice, no matter how big or small. It's the lady who offered to hold my books while I stood on a super-overcrowded bus on my way home today, or the man who gives up his seat for a mom and her child. It was the crazy rock concert thrown last month that gave every last dime of proceeds to a soup kitchen that works with children. This year, I'm hoping to clean out my stored stuff, fix up my toys and dolls from when I was a kid, and anonymously donate them to a school with low resources. Charity to me is NOT the millon dollar check with your name on it so people will thank you and you forget about it the next day. Charity is putting yourself in someone else's shoes for a moment, and doing whatever small part you can to help make that persons life a little bit easier or happier. I dare say its really not as hard as it seems, and practice makes perfect!
ReplyDeletemiss you kiddo.. say hi to Tori!!
I agree with Lisa. I think charity is the little things we do every day to better someone else's day or life. Doing something small that helps others and makes their day/life a little easier is what matters the most. We could donate all of our money to a charity, but sometimes I think the more personal things matter more. Like I was really into helping with the Smile Train, which helps kids with cleft pallets and besides giving money, I was thinking that I would become a reconstructive surgeon or do medical research to help make more effective treatments. I think getting involved in helping others is the best form of charity.
ReplyDeleteCharity can be anything, from helping out your parents with the dishes, to running a marathon for a cause such a breat cancer. Charity can take many forms, but one thing that I am certain about is that we all have the ability to do charity.
ReplyDeleteI participated in a few charitable events, particualy with Campus Ministry on campus. I helped out by fixing up sandwiches for the poor which is then transfer to a park in New York were the poor are fed. This is the midnight run and students are sent to New York to help and set up a table to help the poor.
